You have your whole life ahead of you . . .

However, society does pitiably little to prepare us for that transition from dependency on our parents to life in the “real world”. Sure, we’re educated from the time we can remember, but do the skills we learn prepare us for what’s really going on out there?

With cutbacks in schools systems and a severe reduction in counseling services at all levels, entry into a more adult world can come as a shock in our “high stakes, high cost” culture. In system where you learn how to do advanced algebra but not how to balance a checkbook or do your taxes, it’s no wonder if you’re a little bewildered!

It’s not unusual for people to leave high school unsure of what they want to do with their lives. This is especially true if you know that you want to do something different from what your parents taught you. It’s not unreasonable either, until you’ve had the chance to explore your interests and learn by doing. This takes time and guidance. You’re young, so you have the time — but how can you use that time effectively to forge a happy and successful future?
